We partnered with the Tara foundation to create a technology that uses the power of the ocean and blockchain to raise money for the field of ocean research.

The Tara Expeditions Foundation wanted to raise awareness for their cause and ignite a conversation about the state of our oceans and the difficulty of financing ocean research. With Ocean Miner, we created an installation to raise money and awareness about the need for ocean research. 

A custom water turbine converts kinetic energy into electricity to power a computer (bitcoin miner) placed in a box on the shore. The computer’s graphic cards are then mining bitcoins which is reinvested in ocean research. 

This new kind of fundraiser helped to reach innovators and crypto enthusiast, showing alternative way to raise money, and inspired the public to donate to a lesser known charity organization.

Ocean miners can be easily built with old computers. Hardware and software are open-sourced for everyone to create their own.
